Turning a year older in Copenhagen.
Welcome to Copenhagen, a city where old-world charm meets modern innovation. As Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen is a hub of culture, history, and sustainable living. Famous for its picturesque canals, colorful townhouses in Nyhavn, and many more, this city offers something for everyone.
We went there for a birthday with a group of 10 people. You can find out all about our trip below.
Accomodation
We stayed at the hotel citizenM close to the Rådhuspladsen. It is a really modern and clean hotel at a central location in the heart of Copenhagen. Furthermore it has a really nice bar at the 7nd floor.
Food
For pizza we found a really good place. At “Luca” you can enjoy delicious Italian food in a cozy atmosphere (but don´t speak italian to them :)). But if you like more than only italian food the Tivoli food hall is perfect – offering a variety of dishes from traditional Danish fare to international flavors.
- Pizzeria “Luca” (Gammel Strand 42, 1202 København)
- Tivoli Food Hall

As well as drinking, we also did some sightseeing. Here is what we visited.

Rådhuspladsen, Rådhuspladsen, København, Capital Region of Denmark 1550, Denmark
Rådhuspladsen
Our starting point was the Rådhuspladsen, or City Hall Square. It is the lively centerpiece of Copenhagen, seamlessly blending history, culture, and urban energy.

Framed by the impressive City Hall building and surrounded by bustling streets, this square serves as a hub for locals and visitors alike. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring the city, with Strøget, Europe’s longest pedestrian street, just steps away.
Nyhavn
On our way to Broen Streetfood we passed the iconic harbor district of Nyhavn. With its vibrant, colorful townhouses lining the canal, historic wooden ships docked along the quay, and lively atmosphere, it’s a must-visit destination.
Originally a bustling port dating back to the 17th century, Nyhavn is now a favorite spot for both locals and tourists to relax at charming cafés or bars, enjoy traditional Danish cuisine, or simply stroll along the water. We found also a nice bar called Wall Street Pub there.
In the winter months, Nyhavn transforms into a magical Christmas wonderland, hosting one of Copenhagen’s most beloved Christmas markets. Stalls line the harbor, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decor, offering everything from handcrafted gifts to seasonal treats like gløgg (mulled wine) and æbleskiver (Danish pancake balls).
Christiansborg
You want a free panoramic view of the city – this is the place to be. Christiansborg Palace, located on the small island of Slotsholmen, is a landmark of both historical and political significance in Copenhagen. Home to Denmark’s Parliament, Supreme Court, and the Prime Minister’s Office, it’s the only building in the world housing all three branches of government. Visitors can explore its royal reception rooms, historic ruins, and the impressive Great Hall.

One of the palace’s highlights is its tower, the tallest in Copenhagen, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
Tivoli (Food Hall)
Tivoli Gardens, is a fairy-tale amusement park that has enchanted visitors since 1843. Known for its charming rides, lush gardens, and dazzling seasonal decorations,
Tivoli is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Right next door is the Tivoli Food Hall, a vibrant culinary hotspot offering a variety of dishes from traditional Danish fare to international flavors, making it the perfect place to unwind and indulge.
Unfortunately, during our stay in Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens was closed as it transformed for its magical Christmas season. While we missed the chance to experience its festive sparkle firsthand, the Tivoli Food Hall more than made up for it with its cozy ambiance and delicious food.
Rosenborg Castle (Garden)
Rosenborg Castle, a stunning Renaissance masterpiece, stands as a symbol of Danish royalty and history in the heart of Copenhagen.
Built in the 17th century by King Christian IV, the castle houses the Danish crown jewels and regalia, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Surrounding the castle is the King’s Garden (Kongens Have), a beautifully manicured park and the oldest royal garden in Denmark, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a moment of peace.
While we didn’t have time to explore the castle itself, we took a short break in the serene King’s Garden. The lush greenery, charming pathways, and relaxed atmosphere offered a perfect spot to pause and soak in the beauty of this historic setting.
Vor Frelsers Kirke (Church of Our Saviour)
Vor Frelsers Kirke (Church of Our Saviour), renowned for its stunning spiral tower that offers adventurous visitors a chance to climb to breathtaking views of the city.
Although we didn’t go inside, we passed by this striking church on our way to Freetown Christiania.
With its Baroque architecture and intricately designed interiors, the church is a masterpiece of Danish craftsmanship and a testament to the city’s rich history.
Freetown Christiania
Freetown Christiania is a unique and self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood in the heart of Copenhagen.
Established in the 1970s by a group of free-spirited individuals, this vibrant community is known for its colorful murals, eco-friendly initiatives, and alternative way of life. Visitors can explore its artsy atmosphere, browse local crafts, and enjoy live music or organic cafés.
Christiania’s free-thinking ethos and eclectic vibe make it a fascinating destination, offering a glimpse into a side of Copenhagen that thrives on creativity, inclusivity, and a break from convention.
Canal Tours Copenhagen
As always on our group trips, we went on a boat trip. During the trip you will see, among other things:
- The Copenhagen Opera House,
- Amalienborg Palace,
- Christiansborg Palace,
- the impressive Black Diamond Library
- the Little Mermaid.
X-Mas / Food markets
Broens Gadekøkken – Broen Streetfood
Broens Gadekøkken, also known as Broen Streetfood, is a vibrant and popular food market located in the heart of Copenhagen. Situated along the picturesque waterfront, this bustling street food hub brings together a diverse array of culinary delights from around the world.
Julemarked – Thorvaldsens Plads
Julemarked at Thorvaldsens Plads is a charming Christmas market, nestled in front of the iconic Thorvaldsens Museum. This festive market offers a cozy, magical atmosphere where visitors can explore a variety of holiday stalls filled with handcrafted gifts, Danish Christmas decorations, and seasonal treats.
Racehall
We did also a kart race in Copenhagen. The Racehall in Copenhagen is an indoor karting venue offering an exciting and high-energy experience for racing enthusiasts of all ages. Located just outside the city center, Racehall features a state-of-the-art, multi-level karting track, which is one of the longest and most challenging in Europe.
Night outs
On our first evening, we went to the CultureBox club. Situated in the vibrant Vesterbro district, it is a hub for fans of techno, house, and other electronic music genres. We arrived a little early, but the djane was already playing really good music. This location is really a perfect spot for all techno lovers.
Copenhagen Pub Crawl
We also participated in a pub crawl. The Pub crawl took place in the district of Vesterbro and Nørrebro. Meeting point was the Steel house. Here we got our wristband and the first shot. From there we went to the next bar (Bootleggers Cocktail & Craft Beer Bar). The bar was very crowded but has a cool vibe and good drinks. In sum we visited 4 bars. One of the highlights was the Arcade game bar “Bib Bib Bar”. In this bar you´ll find a lot of old Arcade gaming machines (Pacman, DonkeyKong), gaming console like the Nintendo64 and the game nail beam (Hammerschlagen).
Our final stop was the RUST Club.
